{"id":319,"date":"2017-02-24T15:39:28","date_gmt":"2017-02-24T06:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kristinmartin.net\/?page_id=319"},"modified":"2025-01-21T14:02:12","modified_gmt":"2025-01-21T04:32:12","slug":"lucky","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kristinmartin.net\/?page_id=319","title":{"rendered":"Lucky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kristinmartin.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/64BE7D10-6A85-4EE0-B65D-C1FDABA08BF7_1_102_a.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1455\" src=\"https:\/\/kristinmartin.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/64BE7D10-6A85-4EE0-B65D-C1FDABA08BF7_1_102_a.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My class is so lucky.<br \/>\nThis term we&#8217;re learning about lifecycles,<br \/>\nso my teacher brought in some tadpoles-<br \/>\nthree big black commas<br \/>\nswimming around in a plastic aquarium<br \/>\nright beside our desks.<\/p>\n<p>We named them<br \/>\nFreddo,<br \/>\nKermit<br \/>\nand Spot.<\/p>\n<p>Freddo was the first to grow<br \/>\nstumps<br \/>\nlegs<br \/>\nmore legs<br \/>\nthen his tail shrunk<br \/>\nuntil his body was a fat full stop.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But what do we do with our frog?\u2019<br \/>\nasked Mrs Chugg with a frown.<br \/>\nMy hand shot up quicker than a speeding mosquito.<br \/>\n\u2018I&#8217;ve got a pond!\u2019<br \/>\nSo, she poked some holes in a butter tub<br \/>\nand sent Freddo home with me.<br \/>\n\u2018Lucky duck,\u2019 said Ben.<\/p>\n<p>I carried my precious passenger<br \/>\ndown the street<br \/>\naround the back<br \/>\nthen knelt beside our weedy pond<br \/>\nand gently tipped him in.<\/p>\n<p>Freddo swam to a lily pad<br \/>\nhalf scrambled on and gazed around<br \/>\nat the water<br \/>\nreeds<br \/>\ninsects<br \/>\nand grassy bank<br \/>\nbefore frog-kicking into the murky depths.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to Kermit and Spot,<br \/>\nI&#8217;d say he&#8217;s pretty lucky.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Kristin Martin 2017<\/p>\n<p>A version of this poem is in my poetry book,\u00a0<em>To Rhyme or Not to Rhyme\u00a0<\/em>(Glimmer Press, 2019).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; My class is so lucky.
