My class is so lucky.
\nThis term we’re learning about lifecycles,
\nso my teacher brought in some tadpoles-
\nthree big black commas
\nswimming around in a plastic aquarium
\nright beside our desks.<\/p>\n

We named them
\nFreddo,
\nKermit
\nand Spot.<\/p>\n

Freddo was the first to grow
\nstumps
\nlegs
\nmore legs
\nthen his tail shrunk
\nuntil his body was a fat full stop.<\/p>\n

\u2018But what do we do with our frog?\u2019
\nasked Mrs Chugg with a frown.
\nMy hand shot up quicker than a speeding mosquito.
\n\u2018I’ve got a pond!\u2019
\nSo, she poked some holes in a butter tub
\nand sent Freddo home with me.
\n\u2018Lucky duck,\u2019 said Ben.<\/p>\n

I carried my precious passenger
\ndown the street
\naround the back
\nthen knelt beside our weedy pond
\nand gently tipped him in.<\/p>\n

Freddo swam to a lily pad
\nhalf scrambled on and gazed around
\nat the water
\nreeds
\ninsects
\nand grassy bank
\nbefore frog-kicking into the murky depths.<\/p>\n

Compared to Kermit and Spot,
\nI’d say he’s pretty lucky.<\/p>\n
